BikeWire: Building Communities by Bicycle

A recent post on our Facebook fan page by Andy Zimmerman, founder and creator of BikeWire, caught my eye. At first I thought it spam, he didn’t share anymore info than the link to the beta version of his site, and I clicked.

Turns out, it’s a simple way to connect bicycle riders, those “willing to transport goods” and those “needing goods transported.” You can sign up to be a courier, or request a wire without needing to sign up or create an account.

You set a start location, end location, time frame, load description, trade/price offered, details and contact info. Make a little extra cash, donate your time for non-profits in you area, or just meet new people who appreciate the usefulness of bicycles.

We look forward to offering our cargo bicycles up for use, will be cool to see where and how BikeWire grows.

Tow Truckin’

Peter’s truck had some mechanical hiccups on the way to HQ recently and needed to get it the last mile or so to park it ’til he got it workin’. The Xtra’ crew rolled out with three longtails and managed to lose neither life nor limb in another every day adventure.

Curb finds, oh my!

Reason number 411 for owning an Xtracycle: curb sales.

Peter and Rick, on their way home from work yesterday, stumbled across a frequent site these days: piles of furniture and other abandoned belongings on the curb.

We parked our Xtracycles and began checking out what we may want/need/etc. Peter snagged a collection of kids bikes to harvest prototype parts from. Here’s how that load looked:

Rick poked around a bit and found a tall, unbroken mirror and a small Radio Flyer tricycle. His neighbor’s daughter had a birthday recently (as evidence of the piñata in the recycling bin) and thought she’d love a trike. Turns out, her birthday was that exact day. It’s these magical moments that make our jobs worthwhile.
