Big Dummy & The Pea Pod
A number of Big Dummy customers have expressed concern about whether or not the Big Dummy will allow the Pea Pod to be attached. Indeed, the Pod is designed to fit the struts to the seatstays of your bike. The Big Dummy doesn’t exactly have seat stays in the same place as a regular bike. As a result, you must attach the Pea Pod to the Xtracycle V-racks. The struts on the Pea Pod are set such that you must either run them on the inside of the Xtracycle V-racks, forcing the V-racks out…or you can run them on the outside of the V-racks pushing them in. The snap deck works in the former situation, though isn’t perhaps as secure as it could be.¬† When running the struts outside, the V-rack decidedly will not fit.¬† As you will see in the photos, our 2nd Prototype TekDeck will work with the PeaPod struts running outside. But the length of the TekDeck doesn’t accommodate another passenger behind the PeaPod. *TekDecks, by the way, will be available later this year.
I guess I’m a little confused. The peapod, or bobike, however you want to call it, has two mounts that I’m familiar with, the one that mounts to the rear stays and what they refer to as the “atb mount” which (I haven’t seen one in person) appears to mount to the seat tube and looks like the one pictured above.
So it would seem from what I’ve seen in pictures that the “atb mount” should work with the big dummy, and yet the description above pretty much exclusively talks about the other mount despite the fact that the picture doesn’t match whats being said…
I’m about to pull the trigger on a big dummy and will be using it with kids, so am indeed interested in the solutions to this so perhaps you could clarify a bit, with more pictures and explaining the difference between whats typed and whats i the picture above :)
Thanks!
I’m getting ready to be really stoked about the Tekdex. Any samples for product reviews would be seriously considered.
Pod questions:
The stays from my pod are almost exactly as far apart as the V-racks. Did you do some bending? If so, are you concerned about the integrity of the thing? I screw up enough already, without my kid going off the back…
the pea pod or bobike children seats how like to call them do fit on dummys… you can with some work attach the struts to the dummy frame… never on the v-racks, thats dumb and dangerous…
the ATB bracket with the bobike maxi should be sufficent…
it really works, peapod and big dummy

the Roemer Jockey Komfort will work now too
tested only with 18″ BD frame, I will try the 16″ BD frame next week
No need for name calling. Where exactly are you attaching the struts? To the V-rack receivers tubes? The stays? For the record, I’m working with a free-rad, not a BD.
David,
I just had a big dummy put together with a peapod attached; i have the struts attached to the seat-stays, so the child can make use of the little footrests that attach to them. Putting them straight down under the seat keeps the kid from having anything to put his or her feet on, which can get a little uncomfy. Your local bike shop might have some advice for how it would best fit onto your frame.

hej David, you’re right… no need to… no I attach the struts to the BD seatstays… on my free rad I did fix them on the seatstays of the main bike frame…
here’s the photo proof:

[...] An Article at the Xtracycle blog mainly discussing the Xtracycle pea pod child seat features this image with some additional words on the special platform mounted on the V-racks, replacing the snapdeck, called TekDeck. According to the text it will be released later this year. A very good idea in my opinion since it keeps V-racks attached to each other by use of wide clamps not interfering with nylon mesh. Mounting the snapdeck may become a bit of troublesome when placing it on top of the nylon loops dislocating them backwardly. Also, it looks quite lightweighted and small, while the snapdeck is unnecessarily heavy for sporty touring, I think. [...]
